Biographical Notes:
Son of Mungo Maxwell and Mary Cairns; succ. his cousin, Thomas Maxwell, in 1754 after converting to Protestantism. Served in the French infantry; ruined by the collapse of the Ayr Bank. Inspired Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering.
