From Dumfries-shire; son of William Armstrong, trader; m. Margaret Buncle. Registered solicitor 1755; Advocate 1763; Sheriff-depute Dumfries 1777-88. Ally of the Dukes of Queensberry. 1784 convicted of colluding with a client to defraud his creditors.
